Search Digg with Google

For those of you who do not know the basic Google commands or are too lazy to type in site:digg.com, I added a Digg search with Google to the top right of my site. Feel free to use it to search Digg instead of using the horrible Digg search. I would also like to point out how easy it is to add a search like this, and I'm sure Google would work something great out with Digg for this. They can even make money off the adsense revenue from the search. So please Digg it is a win win situation for you outsource the search.

Digg users looking for porn

Everyday when I check my site stats I see people are searching Digg for these 4 letters NSFW. I keep getting the links because a few months back I wrote an article Digg needs a NSFW button. I just thought it was humorous that so many people are using this search on Digg to find skin. I'm hoping that these users are not adults, because surely they have found better ways by now to find adult content than Digg.

Do diggers actually want a category to help them in their search of porn? I do not personally think it would be a good idea because it would make Digg to farkesq for me. Does this sum up the new type of user that Digg is attracting?

First Sign of Viacom Web Video Failure

Last month I defended Viacom in their decision to host their own video. I'm now changing my stance on this. The video I posted on my site using their embedded code is no longer available. I do not think many bloggers, or anyone else for that matter would want to post a video to their site not knowing how long it will be available.

From where I'm standing it looks like Viacom is trying to save some cash not storing all those videos. This is a huge mistake if they are not willing to spend the money on storage and bandwidth they need to let Youtube take over. If the site doesn't perform as well as Youtube and you have to sit through ads why use it?

Why Digg should let Google take over search

The main problem I run into when submitting articles on Digg lately is the search option. When I'm logged in it takes so much longer and it doesn't even return the correct results to me.

For instance yesterday I was going to submit an article form pronetadvertising.com, but when I searched url only it didn't find anything recent. So I went on to submit the article only to find that the url had already been submitted 30 minutes earlier.

So my request to the Digg staff is that you call Google up purchase a Google search appliance, or at least partner with them. The search on your site is painful I think it would add so much value to the site to fix this.

Delete a single address in Firefox on a Mac

This tip may be obvious to most people, but I'm a recent Windows to Mac convert so I'm constantly looking up shortcuts I used in Windows. The latest one I looked up is how to delete a single address from your address bar in Firefox. The only difference from doing this in Windows is that you have to hold down the shift key when you press delete.

So to delete a single address in the address bar in Firefox on a Mac press shift+delete, this also works on data in forms as well.

Why using proper grammar on Digg is important

Posting on Digg is like Russian roulette if you don't proofread your article. I'm probably the worlds worst person about typing something about very quickly and not going back over it. The thing that I think is worse than posting something with bad grammar is pointing it out as to say "I am better than you because I pointed out your bad grammar" this is in poor taste.

Honestly what is the point of pointing out how bad grammar was it is not like the majority of users on Digg are English majors or journalist. I would dare to say the majority of diggers are techies. I know I am and I normally type faster than I can think thus the majority of my grammatical errors.

Just thought I would share what I was thinking would love to here your comments.

Diskeeper Lite on Lenovo Thinkpad

After spending about 4 hours working on this I thought I would share it in case anyone else runs into this problem. When the system would boot it was crawling and we would check the task manager to see that one of the cores was being completely used at 100% so it was showing a constant 50% cpu utilization. After going through all the services we finally came to the diskeeper service turned it off everything went to normal then started it and it went back to full utilization so we turned the service off and un-installed diskeeper. It could have been running something in the background, but it did not show anywhere that anything was running related to it only that the service was started.

TMNT at Mcdonalds

I was pretty excited last night after we picked up my son a happy meal last night. To my surprise they now have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys. When I was 8 years old I loved the ninja turtles I had all the toys and sadly I can still name them all (Donatello purple bo staff, Leonardo blue sword, Michaelangelo orange nun chucks, and Raphael red two sai the very sad part is that I did not have to look that up.)

I guess the Ninja Turtles have been back for quite some time, but with the new movie coming out I'm betting they become huge again like they were back in about 1989.

Twitter a criminals dream come true

Think about it like this you are about to go on vacation you are using Twitter to update all your friends how your trip is going all the while a burglar is taking his time in your house (knowing that you are thousands of miles away) stealing your possessions. This may seem crazy but it could happen. It seems to me that many people are using twitter as kind of an away message to let everyone know what they are up to, but from a security stand point this is not really a good idea.

Honestly I wouldn't want my child on twitter for the fact if he was to update his status constantly someone would be able to just about track his daily movements and distinguish patterns on his daily routine. Can anyone give me a good reason for a young person to be constantly updating people with their every move?

It is alarming to me how many people are taking to it like they have giving details of every step of their day. Twitter is a social engineers dream come true with the mark always ready to hand over information. It seems as though people are just letting their guard down from the post that I have seen on twitter so far and opening up their lives just a little too much.

Everyone should be aware of what could go on with this and how their data they give out can be used against them. You should be urged to use caution with what data you put about yourself online in all forms.

Terminal Application for OS X

After needing to connect to a switch the other day and having to find a pc with a serial port near the switch I decided to buy a usb to serial adapter.

I ran into a few problems along the way like the driver that came on the disc did not work so I downloaded the latest drivers then I finally had the device show up as /dev/tty.usbserial list so I was ready to go.

The first application that I had no luck with was Quick Term when I connected to the device the first time the application crashed I then was unable to get back to the device again so I started looking for another application.

Then using Darwin Ports installed minicom all I had to do was configure it using the command sudo ./minicom -s choosing the serial port setup changed the serial device to /dev/tty.usbserial then set my link speed and it was good to go.

No Digg for you

I got into work this morning and decided to check the Digg front page real quick see what all was going on, but to my surprise Websense was blocking it. I have run into many other sites before at this particular office that have been blocked but this was the first time Digg has been blocked in well over a year that I know of. The other strange thing was the websense category it was filtered as "Malicious Web Sites."

Maybe it scanned a malicious outgoing link on Digg? Oh well no harm done I then proceeded to work instead of procrastinate.

Text Based Browsing On Digg

Out of random curiosity I decided to see if it would be possible to use a text based browser for Digg without putting too much effort into it.

I started out using lynx but was unable to login to the site. Browsing worked great but the inability to login broke the deal for me.

So then I switched over to elinks which actually seemed to break the page down better giving it a better look and feel and I was also able to sign into my account. After browsing the site for a few minutes I found an article to digg after following the digg it link I received a java error. I played around with it for a few minutes installed spider monkey then reinstalled elinks (using darwin ports) still couldn't get it to work. So I gave up on digging a story went on to test out comments and was denied again due to the captcha (this was also the demise of my attempt to submit a story.)

So in all using a text based browser works great if you just browsing through Digg reading articles, but if you want to use your account (I also admit I may not know what I'm doing with the text based browser and it might work if I put some more effort into it) then I wouldn't recommended it.

On a side note I'm going to used elinks every time I visit Myspace from now on. It is great just think about not having to view all of those horrible (yes I know you probably might want to view my blog in a text based browser if you want to submit yourself to the torture of reading what I write) looking profiles or having to listen to those automatic music players.

Who is better pc or console gamers?

With Microsoft opening up Live to pc gamers I started thinking about who the better gamers at FPS games are. This topic had actually come up at work a while back when some of the guys that are big into consoles said they could take the pc guys. I personally feel that pc gamers have the advantage with the amount of options they have for mapping keys. I'm probably also biased as I do not play many console games so I do not have the feel for it. I would love to hear what you think about who is a better gamer?

Which are better gamers?
PC Gamers
Console Gamers
Church Bingo

Is Netscape Hypocritical?

Netscape is a great social news site in my opinion, but I do have some problems with how authority can be abused. In this article "Global Warming A Hoax?" a caption has been added at the top "The validity of this story is under dispute." and an anchor has added commentary to follow "Fabienne: You may read conflicting reports in this follow up story. [via Navigator Aidenag]".

I'm not going to get into my personal beliefs with this, but I do think it is wrong for the anchors to mark this article as such when articles such as "Gore: Bush admin paying scientists to dispute global warming" are not marked the same. I went to the link and there is correction is now up "Gore responded to a question that incorrectly implied the Bush administration was making payments to scientists to debunk global warming. The Cuatro interviewer should have noted the Guardian Newspaper alleged that the American Enterprise Institute -- a Washington, DC-based think tank -- was offering to pay economists and scientists to dispute a United Nations report on global warming." So clearly "The validity of this story is under dispute" should have been placed in this article.

If an article is going to be marked as inaccurate they should treat all other articles that are not proven fact (such as the example) the same way. There shouldn't be any bias towards a political group if you want to be known as a news site for the people

Kevin Rose Doll

Someone emailed this to me and I thought it was funny create your own Kevin Rose Doll. I'm kind of sad I just wasted about 5 minutes creating that.

It has also been posted to Digg I think this comment says it all.

"When Digg/Kevin Rose fanboyism goes wrong"

Digg Search Much Faster

I'm not sure what has happened, but the search on Digg is so much faster than it used to be. I haven't used it for a while, but I was looking for an old article from all time earlier and it found it within a few seconds almost Google like. I remember a few months ago this search would have taken at least a minute and half the time it would fail. Would love to know what has changed.

I think it would be pretty cool for them to add an additional option to search Digg from Google in site. It would be very easy to implement so I don't see why it would really be a big problem.

Why I love Meebo

I was listening to the most recent episode of TWIT and was surprised to hear how many of the guys on the show thought of Meebo as only useful for the site widgets. I personally love the service I no longer install IM clients and if I go somewhere that doesn't allow me to install an application it works great for what I need. Veronica Belmont apparently uses the service like I do and not just the widgets.

Do most other people see Meebo as a great service and not just for the site widgets?

Rosie Hangs Upside Down for Depression

Does anyone else think this lady is becoming crazier by the day?

1,000,000 Digg Users?

Digg has now reached the 1,000,000 mark, but how accurate is this? I started thinking about this because I have an old account that I asked Digg to deactivate that still shows up as taken if you try to register the account (hemphill81). I can only imagine how many spammer accounts have been deactivated so I have to wonder if they are counting these. I would like to see the numbers on how many active accounts there actually are on Digg or if the deactivated profiles are counted then how many activated profiles exists.

I do like the way Netscape gives you a tracker that shows you how many people have signed up and what number they are. This would be really cool to see who the 1,000,000 member was.

Read a Book Eat a Pizza

I remember when I was in 4th grade (holy crap that was 17 years ago) I used to read as many books as I could to get accelerated reader points so I could get my free personal pan pizza. Now Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood has decided to take on Pizza Hut in a fight to stop promoting fast food in the name of literacy. Should the children be rewarded for reading more in my opinion yes. I think positive reinforcement is great. What do they plan on rewarding the children with carrots and celery?

I see this as a way for this organization to get its name out in the public for their crusade. Why not they are a non-profit with a donation link on the front page of their site.

I hope Pizza Hut and the school will tell them to stick it!

Mac Book Pro for Security Professionals

I recently bought a Mac Book Pro at work for myself. I'm in somewhat of a security role and I was worried at first about what applications I would be able to run. It seems like it will be great for what I need it for though.

Here is a list of applications I am currently testing on it:

Nessus: Actually had an installer for Mac OS X
Metasploit
NMAP
John The Ripper

Does anyone else know of any good security applications I can use with it?
